• The police force will trial the new uniforms in London this November
  • If successful, the fluorescent yellow jackets could be rolled out across England and Wales

They have been iconic figures on streets across the UK for almost two centuries.

But the English bobby is set for a makeover. Police on the beat are to swap their trademark dark blue jackets in favour of high-visibility yellow versions for the first time.

They are being introduced in a bid to make officers easier to spot on the street especially during protests and riots.

The new fluorescent jackets will be tested in London this November and worn throughout shifts. They are expected to be rolled out across England and Wales if the trial is successful.
