BUSINESSES across the West Midlands have been recognised for their contribution to British industry in the Queen’s Awards for 2015.

A Coventry engineering firm which exports 80% of its UK-manufactured products, Jaguar Land Rover, Coventry University, a Birmingham healthcare firm and The Midcounties Co-operative have all been recognised in the awards, which have been announced today.

Coventry-based T A Savery & Co, which trades as energy absorption specialist Oleo International and hydraulic solutions provider Savery Hydraulics, has won the Queen’s Award for International Trade.

The award comes at an exciting time for the company, which has recently manufactured the world’s largest elevator buffer system, launched an industry-first global online sales portal, and expanded its international presence with new sales operations in Spain, North America and China.

The company has been successfully exporting its products for the last 60 years.

The company’s chairman, Sul Sahota, said the award was testament to the company’s innovative design and manufacturing processes, which all take place in the UK.

He said: “We are delighted to have been awarded one of the most celebrated and high-profile awards for commercial success.

“We have been designing and manufacturing all our products from the UK and exporting them overseas for many years and we owe this award to our staff, stakeholders, suppliers and quality processes here in the UK, and to our strong global network of distributors, agents and service centres.“

T A Savery designs and manufactures hydraulics solutions in the UK for customers internationally and currently has operations in China, Germany, the USA and an office in India.

Savery Hydraulics designs and manufactures hydraulic systems for the Ministry of Defence, the energy sector and automotive, and recently designed and installed a hydraulic ring main system at Jaguar Land Rover.

Oleo International designs and manufactures elevator, rail and industrial buffers in the UK and has a strong sales presence in countries such as Sweden, France and Australia. Oleo recently manufactured the world’s largest elevator buffer system, which will be installed into some of the world’s tallest buildings. The buffer is the only one in the world designed to support elevator drop speeds in excess of 20 metres per second.

The company also has the world’s tallest buffer testing tower situated on site at its Coventry plant.

Economic output in the West Midlands reached a 13-month high, according to Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

Lloyds’ purchasing managers’ index (PMI) recorded a score of 61.2 in March, up from 57.7 in February. Any figure above 50 indicates growth.

The score makes the West Midlands the second fastest growing region in the UK, with strong rises in new business, solid job creation and a slight rise in backlogs.

The figures also showed that new business orders placed with the private sector grew for a 29th consecutive month, and at the fastest pace since Jun 2014.

Mark Cadwallader, director for SME Banking in the Midlands at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said: “Private sector firms across the West Midlands were riding high in March, with output growth accelerating to the strongest rate in 13 months.

School uniform? On fully grown women? Bear with us. The constituent elements of classroom dress were all over the catwalks for spring/summer 2015: glossy suede trenchcoats at Burberry; kilts at Joseph, cricket jumpers at Preen and socks at Jil Sander – and gingham and tartan everywhere.

That’s not a big stretch for many of us, who never quite shake off our dependency on a daily uniform of sorts. The catwalk incarnations are particularly lustworthy, But being innately frugal types we wanted to see how far we could replicate the catwalk version by sourcing the real thing. Cast from your mind those memories of frumpy, lumpy jumpers and ill-fitting pinafores, originally purchased in huge sizes by thrifty mothers who then regretted their economy when we insisted on wearing them until they had reached micro length. Forget the “brown coat, brown hat, orange ribbon, and a brown tunic underneath with an orange belt” of Malory Towers; the yellow and purple badge of the Grange Hill uniform.

Instead, evaluate items on their own merits. Which is how we found ourselves in the John Lewis school uniform department cooing over Marni-esque ribbed socks and Girl Guide neck-ties (very Miu Miu pre-fall). Admittedly, there is a fine art to wearing school uniform and making it look as though you have dressed with grown-up resourcefulness rather than nostalgic desperation. Exercise restraint: more than one item will make you look like mutton dressed as Milly Molly Mandy. Think about sizing. If you’re wearing a pleated skirt, keep it long and loose; if you’re tempted by a cricket jumper, wear it oversized and slouchy. Steer clear of Mary Janes and satchel bags, and keep a critical eye on the cut because although fabrics in the school department are built to last, shapes can be a bit too utilitarian. Here’s our report on the class of ’15.

ELLIE PITHERS
When I was a lanky adolescent, I found my uniform quite soothing. A neat gingham shirt, a bottle green pinafore, an itchy V‑neck jumper, a blazer with a crest of daisies and a gabardine proudly decorated with pins represented order and routine. I wasn’t so keen on the bottle-green wool tights. But everything else was reassuring in its promise of conformity. Perhaps that’s why I now routinely gravitate to pleated wool skirts in navy and grey, sober-coloured blazers, cricket jumpers, shiny loafers and knee-length socks. And why, when faced with a fashion cupboard full of school uniforms, I picked this overcoat – nigh on identical to the one I wore at my all-girls school in north-west London. It has a detachable hood, which I hastily removed for fear of looking too Enid Blyton, but paired with jeans and heeled boots, I think it looks quite understated. Or perhaps it’s further evidence of a deep-seated librarian complex.

For the first time on record, more than a fifth of non-food sales took place online this November. How have the UK’s consumer habits changed?

For the first time since records began, Britons have bought more than a fifth of all non-food sales via the web.

Data published by the British Retail Consortium showed that families conducted more than 30pc of clothing, furniture and appliances purchases online this November.

While internet traffic has become increasingly important, bricks and mortar retailing has still been responsible for providing much of the grunt.

Physical stores have been responsible for a great proportion of total sales growth, although this share has declined in recent months.

We’re more than happy to buy shoes online

As a nation we’ve become more comfortable to make online purchases generally, but there remains a clear divide in the kinds of products we’ll order.

More than a third of all shoes are now sold on the internet, and a quarter of clothing.

But health and beauty products, as well as homewares, lag other items.

These seem to be the goods we enjoy shopping for in person – perhaps the sort of items shoppers feel they need to try before they buy.

What made November special?

Transatlantic imports helped to buoy retailers last month – in the form of shopping holidays.

Deals aplenty were on offer to give outlets a kick before the main festive season.

Black Friday, traditionally intended to lure US shoppers out of their homes after Thanksgiving, and its online counterpart Cyber Monday, both shaped the retail landscape.

Clothing led online sales, followed by furniture and appliances to push the total volume of web purchases over a fifth of all sales.

RETAILERS have reported a major improvement in trading last month amid growing optimism in the beleaguered sector.

Figures published today show UK shop footfall in January was 1.6 per cent higher than a year ago, up on the 2.4 per cent fall in December.

The performance is the best since December 2011 and the first rise since July, according to the British Retail Consortium.

The North of England, including Yorkshire, was one of the best performing regions with increased footfall in line with the national average and behind only Greater London, which saw a surge of 3.2 per cent year-on-year, and the East Midlands, where it was up 2.9 per cent.

In other parts, sales varied between increases of 1.1 per cent in the West Midlands to a fall of 1.8 per cent in Scotland.

Helen Dickinson, the director general of the British Retail Consortium, said more shoppers were “out and about” in January.

“It’s good news for retailers and it helps to explain the rise is sales we reported earlier in the month, demonstrating that UK shoppers were enthusiastically checking out the promotions available during the sales season,” she said.

“Out-of-town retail parks and shopping centres did particularly well this month.

“The High Street performed a little worse, with numbers of shoppers dropping slightly by 0.6 per cent.”

She admitted the number of vacant shop units across the country remained high at 11 per cent.

“Empty shops hurt local economies and there is still a need to reduce the costs of operating property by reforming the business rates system,” she added.

Yorkshire’s retail economy has been boosted by the opening of the £350m Trinity Leeds centre – believed to be the biggest new development in Europe last year. It had already attracted 10 million shoppers barely five months after its opening, including many in the evening due to extended opening hours.

They have been iconic figures on streets across the UK for almost two centuries.

But the English bobby is set for a makeover. Police on the beat are to swap their trademark dark blue jackets in favour of high-visibility yellow versions for the first time.

They are being introduced in a bid to make officers easier to spot on the street especially during protests and riots.

The new fluorescent jackets will be tested in London this November and worn throughout shifts. They are expected to be rolled out across England and Wales if the trial is successful.
